Voter Cycle...

On Tuesday, February 5th, 2008, Super Tuesday commenced. A chance for voters in 24 states to express their opinions through electronic balloting for the Democratic and Republican presidential primaries. Illinois, my home state, was one of these states. For political wonks like me, it was heavenly sitting and watching political returns come in all night. Geeky...I know...but I love it.

But this is the story of Sammy's first voting experience!

We arrived at our local polling place. It was located at a middle school nearby.

Before going inside, we paused to think about our upcoming civic duty.

(Luckily, they had placed an American flag outside. Until Sammy saw the flag, he was fully ready to cast his vote for Kashish Achnad in Kazakhstan's hotly contested 15th district. That flag set him straight!)

When we walked in we were greeted by a nice lady who completely forgot about her registration duties because she was too busy being googly-googly over Sammy.

Look at Sammy...playing hard to get...

After a few seconds, I actually had to ask her what she was sitting there for. She looked too sweet to be security! She identified herself as "the registration lady," checked us in, and directed us into the school's cafeteria.

"Are we done here? I'd like to go vote now"

While standing in line, we overheard a Republican election judge verbally sparring with a Democratic election judge. Apparently the disagreement was concerning someone's ballot not being filed properly...they argued and argued...and then they both looked down and saw Sammy looking up...wide eyed...curious about all the fuss. You could see their political anger melt away...clearly moved by Sammy's little cuteness and his long eyelashes...they immediately stopped arguing, resolved the issue civilly, and kept the line moving. I was so proud of my little diplomat Sammy. Look out Model U.N.!

We were then given our ballot, (without asking for any photo ID which I found odd! Anyone could say they were me...and who wouldn't want to be me?)

This is where our voting decision became very difficult.

The lunch candidates were listed on the cafeteria wall.

Sammy and I went back and forth...struggling with our internal moral compasses. Clearly, the Galaxy Cheese Pizza had a solid economic stimulus package, but it's record on deficit spending was lackluster. The Beef And Bean Burrito had a prolific comprehensive immigration reform package, but it's standings on social issues were less than desirable. It would be a tough decision.

Sammy made his way to the voting both.

Afterwards, we didn't discuss our choices...but I am pretty sure he went with the Galaxy Cheese Pizza...he is a sucker for tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese.

They slapped a nice big "I voted" sticker on Sammy. He looked very proud and happy!

Who knew that, in the end, CNN would project Cinnamania French Toast as the overall vote getter?

*Don't forget to click...We are still going strong on Top Momma! Apparently, even though I am a Daddy...I am also a Top Momma! Click here to vote for little Sammy! He is the little guy wearing the blue bucket on his head! After you click on Sammy's picture, it will bring you back to the Nest. Unless people click, I am no longer a Top Momma...so..click away!...Fun! I'll keep this at the top of my posts as long as I am a Top Momma contender*

About the two adults arguing and how they stopped when they saw Sammy ... "...and a child shall lead them..."

Perhaps we should have children present at ALL political events.

Ok, the haircut *IS* super cute. Love that he's like a mini-UN!!

Congrats on taking Sammy to do your civic duty! Little Man watched me mail in my ballot...does that count? ;)

Well, sounds like you two had MUCH more fun then I did. Maybe I SHOULD have taken Harrison to distract Tweedle-dee, Tweedle-dum and the Misfits. OH my gosh, what a group of volunteers that was! The Guy-I-Dig gave me fair warning - it was as bad as he claimed.

Then again, maybe I needed him to distract ME.

I miss our old polling place with the sweet little-old-ladies - at the middle school.

PS that is one BIG "I Voted" sticker!

That's one for the baby books, for sure!!! Too cute.

I'm secretly jealous that you go to vote for the BIG PUSH on Tuesday. We have to wait until sometime in March, but you better believe I'm getting out there... and possibly getting some photos of our own :-)

that was great! isn't it amazing how adults act like children and then when faced with a sweet childs innocent they shape up and act like the civil adults they should be anyway.

hmm - I guess i'll probably be bringing my own munchkin when I vote in november. I'm registered independent so I don't get to vote this time around. :) (though my cute little state did vote for Obama.) But I think i'll actually still be on maternity when election day comes around. Will have to see what effect an 8week old has on the proceedings. As usual - sammy is ABSOLUTELY adorable and this post was very entertaining. :)

Love it!
I took Liam with me (while Quinn was at speech) and the ladies they could not stop talking to him or about him. Of course, they told me, like a hundred times, to keep him warm - it's so cold out there. one lady even said, "Oh...you poor thing had to come out in the cold just to vote." Just to vote???
OH - and the reason they don't require a picture ID is because it costs money to get a license/state ID and then it would be like charging people to vote and that is not nice (or maybe even unconstitutional?). They (not sure who they are) think that by requiring a picture ID they would be excluding low-income people from voting. Some people say that would be racist, but I think it would be, um, classist? Or something like that. Anyway, I felt the same way and said something to my husband who quickly explained what I just explained to you, though I think he used more big words and stuff like that.
Happy Voting Day!

I am glad you enjoyed it! :)

Yes...one of my favorite John Denver lyrics in speaking about children is, "It is written from the deserts...to the mountains they shall lead us...by the hand and by the heart...they will comfort you and me...in their innocence and trusting...they will teach us to be free."

Amen :)

Vdog for Vendetta -

See..haircuts aren't so bad :) Absentee ballots count...so yes!

Golightly -

Voting should be fun...so we were just doing what we always do...making the best out of everything :)

Beth -

Thanks for the dual compliment!

GHD -

If you are voting for a democrat, your March vote will surely still be important...if not...not so much :)

1 plus twins -

They totally changed when they saw Sammy...it was very cute...and a lesson to be learned for all :)

Ilanna -

I can't wait for you to have your baby...that will be so cool!!! Looking forward to your blogs about that!

Rabbi Phyllis -

Thanks...we sure did!

Cathy -

Although I understand your husband's explanation...in every single election or primary that I have voted in since I turned 18...which were many...they HAVE asked for ID...so I just a little shocked!

Thanks for visiting the Nest everyone!

I will be sure to vote for the pizza, come election day, here! I can't wait to take my boys to the booth with me- it's such an important act for our kids to see us do.

Congrats on voting, Sammy :)

That's fun! There's nothing like an adorable child to put politics in perspective. HE'S whom you're voting for. God bless, and thanks for stopping by.

Oh my, what a good little citizen he is! You should make one of those cheesy elementary school filmstrips about voting (remember those???), and Sammy should be the star!

BTW - I think your sister and I must have been twins in a past life. We have the craziest things in common!

Oh that is too cute!!!!

With Romney out, Mccain is going to be the nominee...won't be sure about the Dems for a long time it seems. I am sticking with Galaxy Cheese pizza :)

Brittany -

I think if we launch a blog-wide campaign, we could probably get galaxy cheese pizza on the ballot...which may be better than our other choices :)

Sandy Carlson -

Yes he certainly is...who we vote for...I believe the children are our future...teach them well and let the lead the way...Whitney Houston said that best...before her and Bobby Brown were doing drugs and beating each other up in public... lol

Marci B -

Yes...after reading your blog for a while now...and knowing my sister since she was born...you guys DO have a lot in common...right down to your unhealthy relationship with the New Kids on the Block...lol

Tammy -

Thanks...Sammy does his best :)

Thanks for visiting the nest everyone!

Love the whimsical recap of Sammy's first election day! Melody has "participated" in several elections over the past couple of years, but I never thought to take pictures. Actually, I thought about it briefly the first time, but somehow concluded I wouldn't be allowed to take photos. Silly me.

In all events, I just posted a new blog entry about Melody's most recent election experience you might enjoy.

Please send my congratulations to Sam "Uncle Sam" Egel on his first election!
